To combat rising air pollution in the national capital, Delhi, the government has taken a major and strict decision. Starting November 1st, only BS-VI compliant commercial goods vehicles will be allowed into Delhi.

This means that if your truck or cargo vehicle has an older engine (BS-IV or BS-III), it will no longer be able to enter Delhi’s borders. This step has been taken to prevent pollution from reaching dangerous levels during the winter season.

This order came into effect under joint directives from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) and the Delhi Transport Department. According to the order, all commercial goods vehicles with standards below BS-VI from other states will no longer be able to enter Delhi.

One year relief was also given

The government has provided some relief to transport companies. Commercial vehicles with BS-IV engines have been granted temporary permission to operate in Delhi until October 31, 2026. This means these vehicles will be allowed to operate in Delhi for two more years. During this time, companies will be able to gradually convert their older vehicles to BS-VI standards.

Which vehicles were exempted?

  • Commercial Goods Vehicles Registered in Delhi
  • BS-VI petrol and diesel vehicles
  • BS-IV Goods Vehicles (only till 31 October 2026)
  • CNG, LNG and electric vehicles

These vehicles will not only get entry but will also be given priority so that the use of clean fuel is promoted.

Private vehicles are not affected.

This rule applies only to cargo vehicles. No new restrictions have been imposed on private cars, bikes, or passenger vehicles. Taxis, Ola, and Uber will also continue to operate.

Preparing for stiff fines

The Delhi Transport Department has activated RFID scanning systems at all entry points to ensure that only vehicles that comply with the standards are allowed entry. Violators face fines of up to ₹20,000, and their permits can be revoked if they repeat violations. The government states that vehicles contribute approximately 38% of the capital’s total air pollution. Therefore, a ban on old diesel trucks will have a significant impact on pollution.
