Household budgets across India face a fresh challenge this morning. On Saturday, March 7, 2026, state-owned Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) implemented a significant price revision for Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG). The move, the second in less than a year, reflects the growing “war premium” on global energy as the military conflict in West Asia disrupts traditional supply routes.

While the government has maintained that India has sufficient physical reserves, the cost of securing new shipments has spiked, forcing a pass-through to the end consumer.

City-Wise Domestic LPG Rates (14.2-kg)

Prices vary across states due to the incidence of local Value Added Tax (VAT) and freight costs.

City New Price (₹) Previous Price (₹)
Kolkata ₹939.00 ₹879.00
Chennai ₹928.50 ₹868.50
Delhi ₹913.00 ₹853.00
Mumbai ₹912.50 ₹852.50

The Commercial Burden: Impacts on Hospitality

The hospitality and SME sectors are bearing a heavier load. The ₹114.5 hike for the 19-kg commercial cylinder follows a ₹28 increase just six days ago on March 1.

  • Accumulated Rise: Commercial rates have surged by ₹302.50 since the start of 2026.

  • Delhi Rate: A commercial cylinder now costs ₹1,883, which is expected to lead to a “menu inflation” in hotels and restaurants by mid-March.

Global Context: Why the War is Driving Costs

Industry officials point to the deteriorating situation in the Persian Gulf as the primary driver.

  • Supply Disruptions: With the Strait of Hormuz seeing increased naval activity, insurance and freight costs for LPG tankers have ballooned.

  • Benchmark Prices: Saudi Aramco’s contract prices for butane and propane—the benchmarks for Indian LPG—have seen a double-digit percentage increase over the last week.

Ujjwala Yojana: The Safety Net

To protect the most vulnerable, the government has ensured that the 10 crore+ Ujjwala beneficiaries remain largely unaffected.

  • Subsidy: They will continue to receive a ₹300 subsidy directly into their bank accounts.

  • Net Cost: For these users, the effective price in Delhi will remain significantly lower at approximately ₹613.

Reality Check

The ₹60 hike is a bitter pill for the middle class. Still, officials argue that Indian cooking gas remains the cheapest among neighboring nations due to the government absorbing a portion of the global price surge. Therefore, while the hike feels steep, it could have been much worse if the OMCs had opted for a “full-cost” recovery. In fact, if the war extends into April, we may see another “calibrated” hike of ₹25–₹40.

The Loopholes

The government says Ujjwala users are “protected.” In fact, this is a “Refill Loophole”—the ₹300 subsidy only applies to the first 12 cylinders. Therefore, large rural families who consume more than one cylinder a month will face the full market price for their 13th refill. Still, the “Commercial Leakage Loophole” remains; as the gap between domestic (₹913) and commercial (₹1,883) prices widens, there is an increased risk of domestic cylinders being illegally diverted for commercial use, which may lead to stricter “rationing” or verification at the local agency level.

What This Means for You

If you are a non-subsidized user, update your monthly expense tracker immediately. First, realize that this hike will likely be followed by a slight increase in the cost of “eating out” due to the commercial gas spike. Then, if you are an Ujjwala beneficiary, ensure your Aadhaar-linked bank account is active to avoid delays in receiving the ₹300 subsidy.

Finally, understand that gas booking apps might show old rates for a few hours. You should verify the price with your delivery executive at the time of delivery to ensure you are paying the correct IOC-mandated rate for March 7. Before you book your next refill, check for Amazon Pay or Paytm cashback offers, which sometimes provide a ₹15–₹50 cushion against price hikes.

What’s Next

The Ministry of Petroleum is expected to review the “under-recoveries” of oil companies by March 15. Then, look for an increase in the surveillance of gas agencies to prevent black-marketing of domestic cylinders. Finally, expect opposition parties to announce nationwide protests starting Monday, March 9, against the rising cost of essential commodities.
