Cheque Payment Stop: When you make payment to someone through a cheque, that cheque has to be deposited in the bank for clearing. When the process of transferring money from the account of the person making the payment through the cheque to the account of the recipient is completed, it is called cheque clearance. But suppose the person in whose name you have drawn the cheque has deposited the cheque in the bank for clearance, but now you want to stop the payment of that cheque for some reason, is this possible? Know about it here.
Request will have to be made from the bank
According to HDFC Bank, if you want to stop the payment of your cheque, you can request the bank for this. For this, you can request the bank both online and offline. If you make this request before the cheque goes into the clearance process, then you can stop its payment.
How to request from net banking while sitting at home
If you use net banking, then this work can be done sitting at home. For this, you have to log in first. After this, go to the Request option. Here you have to go to the option of ‘Stop Payment of Cheque’. After clicking, fill in the number of the cheque. If you want to stop payment on a series of cheques, then enter the number of the first cheque in the series and then the last cheque number. If you want to request to stop payment of only 1 cheque, then fill in the number of the same cheque in both the places. After this, confirm by clicking on Continue.
Work will also be done through mobile banking
Even if you use mobile banking, you can request to stop cheque payment. After logging in to mobile banking, you will have to search for the option of Stop Payment. You will have to fill in all the required information and submit the request.
How to request offline
If you want to do this work offline, then for this you will have to go to the bank where you have an account. You will have to request the bank to cancel the cheque drawn there, which has been deposited. This is a written process, in which you will have to enter some important information such as cheque number, date of issue, bearer of the cheque and amount etc.
Quick action needed
If you request a stop payment in time, the bank cancels the payment of that cheque and does not allow the cheque to be cashed. Keep in mind that in such cases you need to take quick action.
Under what circumstances can you make a request?
If your cheque is lost, stolen, if you feel that the cheque has gone to the wrong person, you suspect fraud or if you do not want to pay the cheque for any other reason, then you can request for a stop cheque in the bank. Like HDFC, other banks also provide this facility online and offline.
