New Update on Bullet Train : Work is progressing rapidly on the route to run the country’s first bullet train between Ahmedabad and Mumbai. Meanwhile, the Narendra Modi government at the center is also planning to build a 240-kilometer-long bullet train network to run new bullet trains between two major pilgrimage sites.
Reports say that the second bullet train network is planned to run between Amritsar in Punjab and Jammu in Jammu and Kashmir. Following the recent launch of the Vande Bharat service for the Kashmir Valley, this will be a major gift to Jammu and Kashmir. The opening of this route will connect two pilgrimage sites. Amritsar is home to the Golden Temple, while Katra, 43 km from Jammu, houses the Mata Vaishno Devi temple.
The National High-Speed Rail Authority has invited bids for the “Final Survey for Alignment and Aerial Survey” for the proposed Amritsar-Jammu High-Speed Rail Corridor (HSR). Amritsar and Jammu are major commercial hubs of Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir, respectively. News18 reports that a study has been conducted for the Amritsar-Jammu corridor, with the final survey for route development pending. The report states that the final survey will be conducted using aerial lidar technology to prepare the final alignment design for this route.
A study of the new route is being conducted
NHSRCL documents state, “With a view to meet the growing passenger demand and improve high-speed rail connectivity between major cities/centres of commercial and economic activity, an HSR corridor between Amritsar-Jammu is being studied, which will include, among other things, desired essential points and major public centres. For this purpose, NHSRCL is preparing a detailed project report for this corridor.”
In July this year, the government had told Parliament that it plans to expand the HSR network in India beyond the MAHSR (Mumbai-Ahmedabad) corridor to meet the growing passenger demand between major cities of commercial, economic and tourism importance.
