Big changes are going to come from August 1, 2025 for those who make payments through UPI. These changes will be applicable to all UPI apps (like Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay). If you do not check the balance frequently, then you will not have any problem. Here is a special report by a special correspondent…
Big changes are going to come from August 1, 2025 for those who make payments through UPI. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has issued new rules, the most important of which is, after every successful transaction, the bank itself will tell you how much balance is left in the account. This is so that you do not check the balance repeatedly and the pressure on the system is reduced.
These are the 5 main changes
1. Balance check limit: Now you will be able to check the balance only 50 times in a day on any one app (like PhonePe, GPay). If you use two apps (like Paytm + PhonePe), then there will be a separate limit of 50 times on each app. There will be a restriction or limit on checking balance during peak hours (10 am–1 pm and 5 pm–9:30 pm).
2. Auto balance update after every transaction: Big relief for shopkeepers, street vendors or business people! Now after every successful payment, the bank will send SMS or notification to inform the balance amount. This will eliminate the need to check the balance again and again.
3. Information about linked bank accounts: You will now be able to see the list of bank accounts linked to your mobile number only 25 times a day. This too only when you select the bank yourself and approve it.
4. New schedule of Autopay: Auto payments like Netflix, Amazon Prime or SIP will now be charged only during non-peak hours:
- Before 10 am
- From 1 pm to 5 pm
- After 9:30 pm
- Autopay will be closed during peak hours.
5. Rules for checking transaction status: If the payment fails or gets stuck, its status can be checked only after 90 seconds. This can be done only 3 times a day and a gap of 45–60 seconds is necessary every time.
Other important changes
- Annual audit: Every bank will have to get its system audited once a year. The first report has to be submitted by 31 August 2025.
- Chargeback limit: You can ask for payment reversal (chargeback) only 10 times in 30 days.
- No impact on basic payments: Main services like money transfer or merchant payments will not be affected by these rules.
Why these changes?
In the past months, the load on the UPI server had increased, due to which there were complaints of transaction failure or slowdown. According to NPCI, frequent balance checking or autopay processing puts pressure on the system. The new rules will reduce the server load and UPI will run smoothly.
