New Delhi: The Department of Posts has taken a major decision in keeping with the Executive Order No. 14324 issued by the US government on July 30. Under this order, duty-free exemption of up to US$ 800 on goods sent to the US will end from August 29.
This means that now every parcel sent from India to the US, regardless of its value, will be subject to customs duty. However, this exemption will continue for gift items up to $100.
Recovery will be made.
According to US regulations, duties on goods shipped through the postal network will now be collected and deposited by transport carriers or agencies accredited by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
The problem is that so far CBP has not fully clarified the process for determining the “qualified party” and collecting duty. This is why US-bound airlines have refused to accept parcels from India Post after August 25, as they are not technically and operationally ready.
Why the decision?
According to the news agency Bhasha, in view of this situation, the Indian Postal Department has decided that from August 25, booking of all types of postal articles for the US will be temporarily stopped. However, letters/documents and gifts worth up to $100 will still be accepted and sent.
The Department of Posts has said that it is monitoring the entire matter and is trying to resume services as soon as possible with the cooperation of all the concerned agencies. Customers who have already booked parcels that can no longer be sent to the US can get a refund of the postage. The Department of Posts has apologized to the customers for the inconvenience and assured that full services will be restored as soon as possible.
