Bangladesh Cricket: Two Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) matches scheduled for Thursday (January 15) were postponed despite Nazmul Nazmul’s removal from a key position within the cricket board. Players participating in the BPL were united in their demand for Nazmul’s immediate removal as director of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
Bangladesh Cricket: Following a players’ revolt, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) was forced to remove its own Finance Committee Chairman Nazmul Islam from his post on Thursday (January 15). Senior players of the Bangladesh national team had revolted against Islam for making derogatory remarks. Despite Nazmul’s removal from the key post of the cricket board, two matches of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) scheduled for Thursday were postponed. The players participating in the BPL were united in their demand for the immediate removal of Nazmul from the post of BCB Director.
Under pressure from players and the public, the BCB was forced to take action. Nazmul was forced to remove him from his position as chairman of the board’s finance committee. It is unclear whether he will remain a BCB director.
“The Bangladesh Cricket Board wishes to inform that after reviewing the recent developments and in the best interest of the organisation, the BCB President has decided to relieve Nazmul Islam from the responsibilities of the Finance Committee Chairman with immediate effect,” the BCB said in a statement.
It further said, “The BCB President will hold the position of Acting Chairman of the Finance Committee until further notice. The BCB reiterates that the interests of cricketers are its top priority. The Board is fully committed to maintaining the honour and dignity of all players under its jurisdiction.”
What is the whole controversy?
The controversy erupted when Nazmul supported the Bangladesh government’s decision to withdraw from India for next month’s T20 World Cup due to security concerns. While expressing his support, he dismissed concerns about players’ wages if they withdrew from the tournament. He stated that the players would not be compensated because they had not justified the support they had received so far.
He stated that he hadn’t won a single ICC (International Cricket Council) tournament. This statement caused a significant uproar. The Bangladesh Cricketers Welfare Association (CWAB) demanded his immediate removal. The BCB subsequently issued a show-cause notice to Nazmul.
The board supported the players
“The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) reiterates its regret over the recent offensive comments made by a Board member. The BCB acknowledges the concern caused by these comments and reiterates its commitment to respect for cricketers and the values that the game of cricket promotes,” the BCB said in a press release.
Bangladesh refuses to come to India
Bangladesh is refusing to travel to India. They are citing security concerns because fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was dropped from the IPL on BCCI instructions. “Surrounding events” were cited for Mustafizur’s exclusion. The BCB is still in talks with the ICC to find a solution. The ICC has rejected Bangladesh’s request to shift four matches in India to Sri Lanka.
Nazmul had earlier called former captain Tamim Iqbal an Indian agent. He called for handling the standoff with India with restraint and warned that the consequences of decisions taken today would be felt for 10 years. The Bangladesh Cricketers Welfare Association (CWAB) condemned Nazmul’s statement. Bangladesh Test captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto also appealed for a pragmatic approach.
