The claim has been going viral on social media for a long time that if you press the ‘Cancel’ button twice before withdrawing cash from an ATM, your PIN remains safe. But now it has become clear that this trick has no effect.
The fact-checking teams of both the Press Information Bureau (PIB) and the RBI have termed this claim as false.
What does the ‘Cancel’ button on an ATM do?
The ‘Cancel’ button on an ATM is only useful when you want to stop a transaction midway. It is not capable of protecting your PIN from being stolen. According to experts, PIN theft is usually caused by skimming devices, hidden cameras or people nearby. In such a situation, vigilance is the only weapon for security.
Important tips for safe ATM usage
When using an ATM, always cover the keypad with your hand before entering your PIN so that no one can see it. Check carefully if there is any suspicious device or scanner installed in the machine. Try to use only secure and well-monitored ATMs. Also, keep SMS alerts enabled so that you can get instant information about every transaction. If any suspicious transaction occurs, inform the bank immediately.
Important PIN security rules
Never share your PIN with anyone, even a friend. Change your PIN every 3 to 6 months and never use a simple PIN like ‘1234’ or date of birth. If your card is lost or stuck in a machine, notify the bank immediately. These precautions are your real security, not a ‘cancel’ button trick.
