The officials have been accused of involvement in smuggling fentanyl precursors, a banned drug, into the US. The US Embassy in New Delhi announced on Thursday that it has cancelled the visas of some Indian business executives and corporate leaders.

Amid ongoing tensions over tariffs and oil imports from Russia, the US has taken yet another action against India. The US has revoked the visas of some top Indian officials, accusing them of being involved in smuggling fentanyl precursors, a banned drug, into the US. The US Embassy in New Delhi announced on Thursday that it has revoked the visas of some Indian business executives and corporate leadership.

The move comes just hours after US President Donald Trump warned countries with large-scale drug trafficking and narcotics production. India was among 23 countries the US said it was monitoring in this regard. The US Embassy said the cancellation of visas for executives of some Indian companies is part of Washington’s broader effort to protect Americans from the threat of dangerous synthetic drugs.

“As a result of this decision, these individuals and their immediate family members may be ineligible to travel to the United States,” the US Embassy in New Delhi said in a release. Companies whose executives are known to have trafficked fentanyl precursors will also be flagged by the embassy when applying for visas to the United States. Drawing attention to the threat of fentanyl and illicit drug trafficking, the US Embassy also thanked the Indian government for its cooperation in combating it.

The embassy quoted Charge d’Affaires Jorgen Andrews as saying, “Individuals and organizations involved in the illicit production and trafficking of narcotics into the United States, including their families, will face consequences that may include denial of entry to the United States.” Earlier this year, the US identified China and India as primary sources of illicit fentanyl precursor chemicals and pill-making equipment.

In March, three employees of an India-based chemical manufacturing company were charged in a federal court in Washington, DC, for the alleged illegal import of precursor chemicals used in fentanyl production.
