An Air India flight turned into an “air turnback” drama on Monday morning. AI887, a Boeing 777-300ER bound for Mumbai, had to pivot back to Delhi shortly after takeoff because of a serious engine scare.

The thing is, this wasn’t just a minor glitch. According to DGCA sources, the crew noticed low oil pressure in the right engine (Engine No. 2) while they were retracting the flaps. And then the pressure dropped all the way to zero. Standard procedure dictates you shut that engine down immediately to avoid a fire or total failure. The plane, carrying around 335 passengers, landed safely on one engine. Or nothing.

The “Fog Care” Context

What draws people to this story is that it happened right as Delhi entered its most brutal travel window. The DGCA has officially marked December 10 to February 10 as the “Fog Window.”

  • The “Fog Care” Initiative: Air India is trying to get ahead of the chaos with a plan that identifies at-risk flights before you even leave for the airport.

  • The Tools: They’re using CAT III B certified planes and crews—basically tech that allows a plane to land even if the pilot can’t see the nose of the aircraft.

  • The Kicker: Under this new policy, if your flight is flagged for fog delays, you can reschedule or cancel for a full refund without those annoying penalties. Those too.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has already asked for a detailed report. It’s an ongoing situation with the aircraft currently grounded for a full inspection. Let’s be real, seeing an engine shutdown on a Monday morning isn’t how anyone wants to start their week, but the “air turnback” was the right call.
