Aadhaar News: UIDAI has deactivated the Aadhaar numbers of 14 million people. The target is to deactivate 20 million numbers by December 2025. Learn why and against whom UIDAI has taken this step.

There’s big news regarding your Aadhaar card. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated more than 14 million Aadhaar numbers in the country. However, these Aadhaar numbers belong to deceased individuals. This move by UIDAI is part of the government’s clean-up drive, launched last year, to ensure that benefits from government schemes reach the right people and prevent false claims from being made in the name of deceased individuals.

According to a Times of India report, UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar said, ‘The names of deceased persons Aadhaar number “Deactivation is essential to maintain the credibility of welfare schemes and prevent any potential for misuse. This ensures that public funds are not wasted on fraudulent claims or identity fraud.”

Target to deactivate 2 crore Aadhaar numbers

Currently, Aadhaar is linked to more than 3,300 government schemes. UIDAI aims to identify approximately 20 million deceased individuals by December 2025.Aadhaar numberbe deactivated.

According to UIDAI officials, the biggest problem with this campaign is that Aadhaar number is not mandatory for death registration. This leaves significant gaps in the data. In many cases, the Aadhaar number is either not recorded in the death records or is incorrectly or incompletely recorded. Furthermore, the data is scattered across various financial and non-financial institutions, making verification and reconciliation extremely difficult.

Benefits distributed in the name of the deceased

There have been several instances in the past where government benefits have been issued in the names of deceased individuals. UIDAI is continuously running this campaign to address this problem.

UIDAI has appealed to citizens to report deaths on the MyAadhaar portal. CEO Kumar said, “Maintaining an accurate database is essential for the security of millions of beneficiaries and will further strengthen India’s digital identity system.”
