Aadhaar update charges: If you’re thinking of updating information like your name, address, or photo on your Aadhaar card, this news is crucial. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced new rules related to Aadhaar card updates.

These rules will come into effect on October 1, 2025, and making any changes to your Aadhaar card after that will be even more costly.

According to UIDAI, starting October 1, a fee of ₹75 will be charged for general corrections, such as changing name or address. ₹125 will be charged for updating biometric information (photo, fingerprint, iris). ₹125 will also be charged for biometric updates for children (ages 7 to 17). However, there will be no fee for making a new Aadhaar card; it will remain free as before.

Mandatory update of 10 year old Aadhaar

UIDAI CEO Bhuvaneshwar Kumar stated that starting October 1, 2025, it will be mandatory to update Aadhaar cards older than 10 years. This means that if you haven’t updated your Aadhaar in the last decade, you’ll now have to submit documents and pay a fee. This rule could become an additional expense, especially for people in rural areas and small towns.

Relief for children and adolescents

UIDAI has provided relief for children and adolescents between the ages of 5 and 7 and 15 to 17. Now, there will be no fee for biometric updates for these age groups. Previously, the fee was 50 rupees. However, this update will remain mandatory for them. Failure to update on time could invalidate their Aadhaar card.

Major changes in Aadhaar card details

Starting August 15, 2025, the name of the father or husband will no longer appear on Aadhaar cards for those aged 18 years or older. This information will remain only in UIDAI records. Furthermore, the year of birth (e.g., 1990) will now appear instead of the date of birth on Aadhaar cards. The Care of (C/o) column has also been removed.

New documents for address update

Starting January 2025, only bank statements or utility bills (electricity, water, gas) will be valid for address changes. However, a PAN card, voter ID, or birth certificate will be required to change name or date of birth. Starting October 1, the entire update process will be digital, meaning applications must be submitted through the UIDAI website or the mAadhaar app, and documents must be verified at the nearest center.
