Aadhaar Card Rules: From free service to online updates… these Aadhaar card rules have changed from today

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced several comprehensive changes aimed at simplifying and making the Aadhaar update process more user-friendly. Under the new system, cardholders will be able to update their name, address, date of birth, and mobile number directly through the MyAadhaar portal, provided their Aadhaar is linked to an active mobile number.

Biometric updates such as fingerprints, iris, and photograph will still require a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. However, the integration of auto-verification into the UIDAI government database will reduce the manual process, allowing for faster and more accurate corrections. Furthermore, the fee for updating Aadhaar cards has been waived for one year. Let’s explore the changes regarding Aadhaar starting today.

What rules have changed in Aadhaar from today?

• If mobile OTP verification is enabled then there is no need to visit Aadhaar centre to change name, address, date of birth or mobile number. 
• UIDAI will use existing government data to check the rules, thereby reducing paperwork. 
• Biometric update costs ₹125 for most, but is free for children in the key age groups (5-7 and 15-17 years). 
• Updating name, address etc. separately costs ₹75, but it is free if done along with biometric update. 
• Only document updates through the MyAadhaar portal are free until June 14, 2026. The cost per centre is ₹75.

PAN-Aadhaar based deadline

UIDAI reiterated the need to link Aadhaar with PAN before December 31, 2025, and warned that failure to do so may result in PAN deactivation, service restrictions, and delay in KYC or refunds.

Aadhaar-PAN linking process 

• The mobile number linked with Aadhaar must be active and OTP enabled.
• Complete biometric updates if necessary.
• Check PAN-Aadhaar link status before the deadline.
• Use the myAadhaar portal to track the update using the URN (Update Request Number). 
• UIDAI said these changes are aimed at ‘streamlining citizen access’ and reducing dependence on physical infrastructure for regular Aadhaar maintenance.
