2026 Kia Sonet Debuts: Diesel & Turbo-Petrol Automatics Now Under ₹10 Lakh

The compact SUV segment in India just became significantly more competitive. On Friday, March 13, 2026, Kia India rolled out its Model Year 2026 (MY26) updates for the Sonet, specifically targeting the gap between budget manuals and high-end automatics. By introducing advanced automatic transmissions into lower and mid-spec trims, Kia is effectively challenging the notion that “luxury” gearboxes like the DCT or Torque Converter are reserved only for the ₹12 lakh+ bracket.

The Shift: High-Tech Gears at Mid-Spec Prices

Previously, if you wanted a diesel automatic or a turbo-petrol DCT in a Sonet, you had to look at upper-tier trims like the HTX or GTX.

  • Diesel Democratization: The 6-speed Torque Converter is now available as low as the HTE(O) trim for ₹9.78 lakh.

  • Turbo-Petrol Accessibility: The 7-speed Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT) now starts at ₹9.89 lakh in the HTK(O) trim.

Engine Specs: Diesel vs. Turbo-Petrol

Kia continues to offer one of the most diverse engine lineups in the segment:

  1. 1.5L Diesel: Produces 116 hp and 250 Nm. It is the only vehicle in its immediate price bracket to offer a proper 6-speed Torque Converter rather than an AMT.

  2. 1.0L Turbo-Petrol: Produces 120 hp and 172 Nm. The 7-speed DCT provides lightning-fast shifts, making it the enthusiast’s choice under ₹10 lakh.

  3. 1.2L Naturally Aspirated: The base engine producing 81 hp, primarily for city runabouts and entry-level pricing.

Despite the aggressive pricing, Kia hasn’t stripped these variants to the bone.

  • Standard Safety: Every MY26 Sonet includes six airbags, ESC, hill-start assist, and rear parking sensors.

  • Tech Comforts: Stepping up to the HTK+ adds an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, a rear camera, and cruise control.

The Competitive Landscape: Rivals in the Ring

With a starting price of ₹7.30 lakh, the Sonet finds itself in a crowded arena. Its primary rivals include:

  • Mahindra XUV 3XO & Tata Nexon: Strong on safety and turbo-petrol options.

  • Hyundai Venue: The “cousin” rival with similar tech.

  • Maruti Suzuki Brezza: The reliability and resale value leader.

  • Skoda Kylaq: The newest European entrant in the sub-4m space.

Reality Check

A diesel automatic for under ₹10 lakh is a massive win for high-mileage drivers who hate manual shifting in traffic. Still, remember that automatic transmissions are thirstier. Therefore, while the diesel manual gives you 22.3 kmpl, the automatic drops to 18.6 kmpl—a nearly 17% difference in fuel costs. In fact, if your daily commute is under 20km, the extra cost of the diesel engine and the automatic transmission might take 5-6 years to “pay for itself” compared to the base petrol.

The Loopholes

Kia says the automatic is “under ₹10 lakh.” In fact, this is an “Ex-Showroom Loophole”—once you add insurance, road tax (which is higher for diesel), and registration, the “on-road” price will easily cross ₹11.2 to ₹11.5 lakh in most Indian cities. Therefore, your “budget” should be ready for a six-figure jump over the advertised price. Still, the “Safety Loophole” remains; by making 6 airbags standard, Kia has essentially forced its competitors to stop charging a premium for basic life-saving tech.

What This Means for You

If you have been looking for a car that handles city traffic without the “jerkiness” of an AMT, this is your best bet. First, realize that the 6-speed Torque Converter in the diesel is much smoother than the AMTs found in the Tata Nexon or Maruti Fronx. Then, if you are an enthusiast, understand that the HTK(O) Turbo DCT at ₹9.89 lakh offers the best performance-per-rupee in the current market.

Finally, understand that resale value for Diesel ATs is traditionally very high. You should view this as a stable investment if you plan to keep the car for 5+ years. Before you book, check the “Sierra Accident” news (related to Tata) to see how competitors are handling safety narratives in the current news cycle.

What’s Next

Expect long waiting periods for the HTE(O) Diesel AT, as fleet operators and budget commuters will likely swamp dealerships. Then, look for festive discounts on the 1.2L manual models, as Kia will want to push the newer automatics. Finally, expect Honda to officially pivot toward hybrids now that their small EV plans (Zero SUV/Sedan) have been reportedly scrapped.
